"Get Your Art On"? ft. Participation: Un Question Pour Vous!

I think this is a very cool thing!!!

But wait. If you feel like taking a look at the little art projects people have sent in to them...are they really good, or really bad? I honestly can't tell. But I do get the impression that pretty much anyone can design an appropriate cover-artwork-square-thing. Which is...depressing? Because designing album art could very well be one of the very raddest jobs out there, but I get the feeling, based on these examples others have sent in, and Sharpie graffiti on bus seats, and even just little sketches in the margins of kids' notes at school, that everyone is equally qualified for it. Art is easy, shit that looks good can happen out of anyone - maybe even YOU. Unfair, damnit! It makes my dream job far too easy to do and not get paid for, and damn near impossible to do in exchange for moneys. Also it makes me feel so very not-special.

AND, is there maybe a finite number of styles of album art out there? Bad grammar, maybe, but stuff looks the same as other stuff. I think.

Anyway, enough of that because I really must pose a certain question to The Ones Who Know (...I'm looking at you, Voxtrot fan guy):

Why isn't the Wolf Parade fellow really really really famous? He's talented and good looking with some likewise talented and good-looking chums, with whom he's made quite a bit of music. Near everyone who's heard them, likes them, and enough people have heard that you'd think word of mouth would make them bigger than U2. Would him and his cronies maybe be starsies if they were to unify their body of work or whatever, find some way to give it just one name instead of the one million different names they go by now? Or is it that they're Canadian (but has that ever mattered really)? Or that maybe I am dumb; uh, there's something obvious that I'm missing or what? They just aren't interested in getting lots and lots of money for something they do very well, or...is something stopping them? If so, what is it? Do they just need a bit more time?

That is pretty neat! Yes, everyone can and many people do make amazing art. As I have gotten older, I really believe that talent is neither rare nor special, but very often unrecognised. Your thoughts, kids?
Also, Spencer Krug is very famous. Have you been living in a cave on Mars with your head under a rock wrapped in some sound-proff material for the past three years? I'm not sure making G Unit-esque coin is his aim though.

he's famous, but not "really really really famous" (which is what i was asking!). he COULD be making G Unit-esque coin! so then he just isn't because it's not "his aim"? pshhhhhh figures

Firstly, I'm not 'voxtrot fan guy', I happened to find some of their older stuff not so bad, reminscent of Ride for example.

Secondly, do you want frog eyes/swan lake/sunset rubdown/wolf parade (and if we go on, then the defunct atlas strategic, as well as handsome furs/johnny and the moon etc) to unite under one band name? That wouldn't make any sense. Those are all separate groups for a reason. Also, giant collective groups are annoying.

As to why Spencer, in particular, has not obtained the same popularity as, say, U2, that can't be put down to being Canadian (since we subsidize cultural endeavours) nor can it simply be put down to lack of being heard (though it can in part, perhaps) nor can it be put down to a hatred of money (though it also can in part - witness Spencer's decision to sign sunset rubdown to absolutely kosher(in lieu of more viable labels), so as to avoid the overexposure/pressure/media circus that accompanied Wolf Parade's signing with Sub Pop) but rather it's 'explainable' by 'tastes', I assume. Some people love their U2.

All of this is an attempt at a response/preamble to 'I don't really know', I mean some people like poo-porn and I can't explain that either.

i don't want them to unite under one band name, no, or at least i don't think i do. i wrote that thing about uniting kind of in an attempt to ask WHY they didn't do it - you say they're all named differently for a reason, well, i don't know the specific reasons. sorry. i'll look that up. and i don't find giant collective groups annoying?

'tastes' do 'explain' it, sure, though i've never heard anyone say they dislike anything wolf parade, etc, have done...it's just weird is all.

but thanks.
